Southern Arizona could be in for a headline-grabbing upset if uncounted votes deliver victory to an upstart Republican over the handpicked successor to former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
“As we’ve seen over the last three or four hours of results, the momentum is all Martha’s,” McSally campaign spokesman Bruce Harvie said early Wednesday morning. “We’re confident at this point the momentum is going to hold up, and Martha’s margin is going to keep moving forward.”
Only 1,312 votes divided McSally, 46, and Barber, 67, after workers stopped counting ballots in Pima and Cochise counties.McSally clearly won Election Day votes, while Barber led in early ballots, but many votes remained to be counted. Both county election offices were set to begin tallies again starting at 8 a.m.
Harvie argued that early and provisional ballots cast on Election Day will bode well for McSally and that a significant number remain in Republican-leaning Cochise County.
