Focuses on fight for women's rights in military
Tucson - Martha McSally's campaign today released their newest television ad of the General Election titled "Absolutely." The ad focuses on McSally's successful fight against the Pentagon's policy which required U.S. servicewomen to wear Muslim garb when serving in Saudi Arabia.
"When I found out about the military policy," said McSally, "I thought it was degrading and discriminatory, so I stepped up to get it repealed on behalf of the troops. It wasn't easy, it took a lot of perseverance, and it nearly cost me my career, but it was the right thing to do as an officer and leader. I will do the same thing to represent Southern Arizonians in Washington: stand up and fight for what is right, no matter the cost."
After appealing up the chain of command for 6 years on behalf of the troops, McSally was given orders to Saudi Arabia and was threatened with a court martial if she did not wear the full garb upon arrival and sit in the back seat. She complied with the policy for 13 months along with a final appeal for the policy to change, then filed McSally vs Rumsfeld in court, gaining national media attention. As the case was working its way through the courts, Colonel (retired) McSally used what she learned as a Legislative Fellow and drafted legislation to overturn the policy once and for all. She gained sponsors on both sides of the aisle and tirelessly shepherded the legislation through. It was voted on unanimously as a free standing bill by the House and as an amendment to the yearly defense bill in the Senate, and signed into law in December 2002, nearly 8 years after she started to fight to overturn the discriminatory policy.
"This story is one the people of Southern Arizona need to hear," said McSally campaign manager Bruce Harvie. "It is a testament that Colonel (retired) McSally will stand up for what is right, no matter how long it takes and what the personal consequences may be. It also reminds us that she is a pioneer for women and has been fighting for their rights and equal treatment her whole life. We need this kind of leadership, moral courage, and perseverance in Congress right now and that is what she will bring representing the people of Southern Arizona."
The advertisement began running on broadcast and cable television in the 2nd Congressional District on October 18th!
Martha McSally is the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat, and first to command a fighter squadron in combat in United States history. In 2001-2002, Martha McSally earned national recognition for successfully overturning a military policy requiring all U.S. servicewomen to wear Muslim clothing when off base in Saudi Arabia.
